ANNOUNCEMENT
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
The European Society for Social Pediatrics (ESSOP) invites you to participate in its next congress which will be held in Istanbul from October 13 to 16, 1999. The topics of the meeting will be centered around 'School Health'.
School Health has a unique feature which is the application of our knowledge about health and illness in an educational setting. School Health covers among its tasks the monitoring and promotion of health in school children and the organization of these services to reach children individually, the identification of ill health and of the problems of development and behaviour in school ages children so that they are understood and appropriately managed, thus preventing or minimizing their undesirable consequences. None of these tasks can be successfully accomplished unless the contribution of social factors on child health is well recognized.
Turkey has recently accomplished an important reform in its educational system by raising obligatory primary schooling from 5 to 8 years. New situations bring new problems as well as new outlooks and new solutions, which we hope will all be discussed at this meeting with contributions not only from the medical profession, but from the educators as well.
The world is changing rapidly as we approach the 21st century. The end of a millennium is an appropriate time to examine critically all that has been accomplished to date and to find better ways, when possible, to promote the health of the school age children in the future years.
Within this framework, we are looking forward to meeting you in Istanbul in 1999.
